Adult Learner Permits

All CA drivers must either have a learners permit or a valid license, regardless of age.

Persons over 17 ½ are not required to complete a driver education course. To get a permit, they must simply apply for a driver’s license and pass the Knowledge Test.

HERE’S EASIEST WAY TO GET YOUR CALIFORNIA LEARNER’S PERMIT IF YOU ARE OVER 17 ½ YEARS OF AGE.

You can just walk into the DMV to apply for your permit and take the knowledge test but we recommend getting your permit the “Easy” way.

  1. Apply for your License online: Complete a “DL44” license application and pay the DMV fee.

  2. Schedule a Test Appointment online at www.dmv.ca.gov/appointments. Or… you can just walk in to take the written test. Be prepared to wait an hour or more.

  3. Study for the DMV Knowledge Test: Read the California Driver Handbook (Hard copy available free at any dmv or online here: www.dmv.ca.gov). Take as many sample tests as needed (available here: www.dmv.ca.gov/sampletests) until you are passing with at least 85% success. Many people also find our Online Driver Education Course to be very helpful in preparing for the Knowledge Test.

  4. Take and Pass the DMV Knowledge Test at the DMV: As soon as you pass the written test, the DMV will issue an instruction permit. You will be legally allowed to drive with any CA licensed driver over 18 with your permit.

Professional instruction is not required for permitted drivers who are over 17 1/2. Sounds crazy, but that’s the law. We strongly encourage as many lessons with a professional as necessary until the student is safe, comfortable and confident behind the wheel. Most new drivers need at-least 8-10 hours of professional coaching along with about 25-30 hours of practice before they are safe and ready to pass the behind the wheel test.

We look forward to helping you become the safest driver that you can be.
